What is the DELF?
The Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française is
a certificate awarded by the French Ministry of National Education.
The DELF has 2 levels:
-DELF premier degré (level 1) consists of 4 units (A1,
A2, A3, A4)
-DELF second degré (level 2) consists of 2 units (A5, A6)
DELF not only evaluates a candidate's language level,
but also assesses the candidate's ability to communicate effectively
in French. It is valid indefinitely.
Who can enroll?
DELF1 is designed for all non-native speakers of French and preparing
for each unit requires 100 hours of learning.
DELF2 is designed for any non-native speaker of French:
If the candidate has passed DELF Level 1 (irrespective of the
country where the exam was taken), they may then prepare for DELF
Level 2.
If the candidate has no French language qualification, they may
sit the access test for DELF Level 2 (TD). Provided candidates
pass the access test they may then prepare for DELF Level 2 (N.B.
No certificates are awarded for the access test.)
If the candidate has no French language qualification, they may
also take the TCF, which may allow candidates exemption from DELF
Level 1 (depending on marks obtained in TCF). Candidates must
reach the intermediate level of TCF and get at least 12/20 in
both optional tests (writing and speaking). The advantage of the
TCF is that candidates will obtain a certificate of their level
of French, even if their French is not of the required level to
take DELF Level 2.
